List Writing

We have been working on list writing!  We have learned that lists have: a topic, numbers, and words and pictures.  We teamed up with a partner to practice some different topics:

Lists are a great way to involve your child in writing at home.  Next time you make a shopping list, work together with your child to write it! :)  Talking about your plans for the weekend?  Work together to make a list of things you need to do!

The Snow Is Here!

Burrrrrr!  The snow and cold are here, so here are some things you need to know and some helpful tips for preparing your child for school in this weather.

1.  First, get a re-usable and sturdy bag.  This will help your child store and carry the extra winter gear that he or she will need for outdoor recess.  Your child can also easily hang this on the hook or store it below the coat rack on the floor.
2.  Your child should have:  a hat, gloves or mittens, boots, & snow-pants.  Scarfs aren't a bad idea either!
Outdoor recess is generally 25 minutes after lunch and this can lead to cold and tearful kiddos when they are not prepared for the weather.
I also usually have a few students that don't want to wear all of their gear.  I will hear, "I don't have a hat," or "I forgot my gloves."  But when I look in backpacks, I often find them.  Please have a conversation at home about the importance of wearing all the gear to stay warm.

I strongly suggest water-proof & warm gloves like these:

These stretchy, cotton ones quickly get wet in the snow & aren't great for keeping hands warm for long periods of time outdoors:

3.  Make sure your child has a pair of tennis shoes or sneakers to wear on P.E. days (Tuesdays).

4.  Teach your child how to get dressed in winter gear.  First, snow pants.  Second, boots.  Then, jacket & zip.  Then, hat.  And last, gloves.  This order can be difficult for some students and can take some time when students are not used to doing it for themselves.  "Supervise" this process at home;  don't do it for your child!  He/she needs to learn!

Recess Routine:
We will go outside unless the windchill is below 20 degrees.
For indoor days, your child may bring a toy in his/her backpack to play with at recess.  We do have recess activities in the classroom, so this is not necessary but some students like to.  Please make sure that the toy does not make sounds.  It also should fit in your child's backpack and should remain there during all other parts of the day.  Please discuss these expectations at home.

Thank you for your support with this process!

Spelling Homework

This week, all First Graders and some Kindergarten students begins Words Their Way, which is a word study program.  This program focuses on internalizing word and spelling patterns.  Students are differentiated into groups according to their spelling needs.  Today I met with your child and introduced this week's work.

Each week, your child will receive a new word sort on Monday for home.  It will come home in a red homework folder.  This folder is due back to school on Fridays.  You will support your child at home in learning that word pattern throughout the week (please see the explanation sheet).  Your child should practice the sort 2-3 times per week, and writing should be one of those practices.  It may look like this:

1.  Cut picture/word cards and locate the title pieces to the sort.

2.  Sort picture/word cards, saying each card out loud.

3.  Check the sort by going through and reading each picture/word card aloud, to ensure that cards were sorted properly.  I also encourage students to highlight the spelling pattern in the written words.

Keep the sort pieces in a safe place at home (plastic ziploc bag works well) - this sort does not get returned to school.  Your child will test on the words each Friday.  Any questions, please ask!

Week 3/4

We are continuing to learn the routines and expectations for our classroom!  We have been working on learning to complete a "work cycle," which is an important component of the Montessori classroom.  Check out our work cycle steps:
Talk with your child about how he/she completes these steps:
1. Choose a work
2. Get the work
3. Do the work
4. Check the work
5. Put the work away
6. Clean your work space
And repeat!

Talk with your child about how he/she has been choosing works in the classroom.  You might ask:
1. What is your favorite work?
2. What works do you like doing over and over?
3. Have you tried any new works this week?
4. What works seems challenging to you?

Check out some of our new works:
Solar System 3-Part Cards

4 Seasons Activities Sort

Life Cycle of an Apple

A few reminders for this week:
* Apple & Solar System Projects are due for all students on Monday, October 3rd.  We look forward to presenting these next week!  See this post for more information.

International Peace Day

Wednesday is International Peace Day!  We are recognizing this day as a school with a special ceremony Wednesday morning.

Students should wear:
*white top
*kaki pants

We are also asking that each student make two paper cranes with origami paper.  We will be sending these to the Children's Peace Monument (also known as Sadako's Statue) in Hiroshima, Japan.  Tomorrow, your child's folder will come home with the paper and instructions.  Please return the cranes to school on Wednesday (the next day).  I apologize for the short notice.

Monthly Family Projects

Hello Oak Room!

The K-1 classrooms will be having monthly family projects for every student.  This is a project related to a theme we are studying in the classroom.  It will be done at home and then presented in the classroom.   You will generally have two weeks/weekends to complete the project.

Our first projects went home yesterday in your child's folder.  You will find:
* A description page
* A rubric
* A student page that serves as the project

This month, Kindergarten will be doing an exploratory apple-tasting project.

First Graders will do a planet research project.  I recommend visiting the library this weekend to begin collecting and reading books on your child's chosen planet.  Spend some time each day reading about the planet.  You may also find these online resources helpful:
National Geographic Kids
Planets for Kids
Kids Astronomy
First Graders will need to:
*Present 4 interesting facts learned about the planet
*Draw a detailed and colored picture representing the planet
*Provide a model of the planet

With projects like these, the purpose is for your child to learn and explore.  It's also a great opportunity for your family to interact with your child around learning, showing your child how important the learning process is.  These projects are what you make them!  If you invest time and thought into the project, your child gets more out of them.  I also recommend you practice presenting part of the project with your child at home, so they are prepared and comfortable presenting to the classroom.

This first project is due Monday, October 3rd.

Any questions, please ask.  Happy exploring!
